How to Transfer Data (copy file) from one computer to another with Ethernet Cable with FTP

This is method 2:

You will need a: Ethernet "Cross over cable" and ftp server, ftp client softwares. I recommend filezilla which is free.

This not the Ethernet cable that you use normally to connect to your cable/DSL modem.
See the picture below for the illustration.

This is an easy method/ very fast for people with technical background.

Step 1: Getting Ready:

  • Make sure both of the computers have NIC card (i.e. Network Interface Card) and Network interface is enabled (to enable Network Interface, go to Start-> Control Panel and click on Network Connections then Right Click on Local Area Connection and click on Enable).
  • Make sure you have Cross Over Cable with you (It is different from Straight through Cable and can be available at the same computer store where you get Straight Cable).
  • Connect both computers with cross over cable (i.e. connect crossover cable to Ethernet Port of each computers).
  • Quit the ZoneAlarm Firewal (or any other firewall program), otherwise you might not see the shared folders.
  • Download and install 'filezilla ftp server' on computer A (where the files are), and 'filezilla ftp client' on computer B where the files need to go. http://www.filezilla.com

Settings:

You have to assign permanent (Static) IP address. Here are step-by-step instructions showing you how to set permanent IP address and other network information:

  • Go to Start and click on Control Panel.
  • Control Panel window will appear. Double click on Network Connections.
  • Network Connections window will appear. Right click correct Local Area Connection by identifying correct network card and click Properties.
  • Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties.
  • Click on the Network Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Properties and then Click Use the following IP address. After that, enter the values shown below for each of the computer described as computer A and Computer B and then press OK.
  • Optionally you can turn off wireless.

Computer A:
IP Address: 10.10.10.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

  • Run the 'filezilla server' program you installed.
  • Click on the edit->users and click on add give a user name (there is no need to give password)
  • choose the shared folders as C:\ and
  • check all the check boxes under "files" and "directories"

Computer B:
IP Address: 10.10.10.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

  • Run the 'filezilla client' program you installed.
  • Set the Host to 10.10.10.1 and user name to whatever name you gave above
  • click quick connect button, you will see that you are able to login successfully.

Start Copying:

Just drag and drop the files or folders (multiple folders) on the client software

I do this way! It is very fast!!

Enjoy your day.
